Cafe Theme: Working the Angles

We live in the world of the nones. The Nones are now North America's most prominent "religious" group. But being a none does not mean a person does not believe something. Indeed, we live in a time of exploding spirituality and exploding guilt.

We live in a culture surprisingly riddled with guilt. In the face of this guilt, people are working the angles to deal with their guilt by pursuing new and divergent spiritual practices and communities to find flourishing. Sadly and painfully, many of these spiritualities fail to deliver what people are desperate for.

At this year's Church Now Cafe, Andy Root will lead us in discovering the spiritualities that have flooded North American culture and show why they are finally unsatisfying. He will show us how these spiritualities impact the church (and even the political divisions in the church). Andy will lead us to discern a more excellent way of walking with people in this age of multiple spiritualities that centers on a theology of the cross and the hope that flows from living out a life of confession and submission to God.

Dr. Andrew Root Author, Speaker, Professor.

I often go by Andy. I teach classes on a theology of ministry, youth ministry, and culture at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN.

At Luther I’m the Olson Baalson Professor of Youth and Family Ministry and have lately been thinking and writing on issues surrounding the intersection of faith and our secular age.

I’ve written a number of books and have given lectures and presentations across the country and globe both to church groups, universities/colleges, youth workers, and academic communities.

I live in St. Paul, my wife Kara is a Presbyterian minister and we have two kids (Owen and Maisy) and a dog. When I’m not teaching and writing I watch a ton of TV.
